Nuffield - A reason to Celebrate!

12 students from Lincolnshire gathered at the University of Lincoln to celebrate their achievements in the Nuffield Bursary programme for 2009.

The Bursary Scheme enables year 12 students who are interested in pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM), to work alongside practicing scientists, technologists, engineers or mathematicians in commercial or industrial establishments, research institutions or universities.

The Nuffield Foundation awards each student a bursary to carry out a project, which is designed to make a real contribution to the host organisation as well as benefiting the students themselves. The placements each lasted from four to six weeks and took place during the summer holidays and all students have the support of staff from The Lincolnshire & Rutland EBP who administered the project.

This Celebration Event, hosted by the University and organised by The Lincolnshire & Rutland EBP, offered the students involved in the scheme an opportunity to display their projects and achievements during their placements and to meet and discuss it with other bursary students, supervisors, teachers and especially invited guests, including Dr Ron Dixon, Head of The School of Natural and Applied Sciences for The University of Lincoln and Cllr Mrs Watson.

Also in attendance was Courtney Williams who was a Nuffield Bursary student in 2008. Courtney Williams, until recently a pupil at William Farr C of E Comprehensive School near Lincoln, spent 6 weeks at the University of Sheffield in Summer 2008. Courtney is now studying Physics at Imperial College London, and was recently awarded a top prize at the EU Competition for Young Scientists (EUCYS). Courtney showed how taking part in the Nuffield Bursary programme can lead to great achievements and opportunities in Science.

Each of the 12 students had a different project which included topics such as research into small molecules that interact with DNA and examining the expression of multidrug resistant proteins in cell membranes, all very impressive when you realise that the students are mostly aged between 17 and 18!

Stella Morgan, Curriculum Enrichment Manager for The Lincolnshire & Rutland EBP commented  "All of the students carried out some fantastic work and should be very proud of their achievements"
